When there aren’t fifteen other people distributing the needs for companionship, laughter, advice, belonging, spontaneous conversation, emotional support, outings, etc. (low social capital), one highly available person can naturally become disproportionately important. So that person doesn’t merely feel like just a friend and if that friendship should become less active or quiet it can feel like losing your confidant + companion + source of affirmation + familiar person + romantic possibility + person-you-tell-things-to + emotional stimulation + antidote to loneliness all at once. No wonder detachment can feel disproportionately difficult even though you all are “just friends”.
You could technically be “friends” while talking constantly, sharing your day, seeking his advice, receiving emotional support, laughing together, checking in, becoming one another’s familiar person—and suddenly the relational space isn’t nearly as open as the label friendship would suggest. Nothing inappropriate would even have to happen. The sheer volume of emotional intimacy could create an attachment structure that it wasn’t intended to carry.
The problem isn’t necessarily male friendship. It isn’t even necessarily emotional intimacy between a man and a woman. It’s when the structure of the relationship starts carrying far more psychological weight than the relationship itself has actually committed to carrying.
You can technically be friends while someone becomes the person whose attention matters enormously, whose absence you notice, whose communication regulates or dysregulates you, whose opinion carries disproportionate weight, whom you want to tell things to, whom you miss, whom you imagine possibilities with, and whose availability begins affecting your emotional world.
Male friendship can sometimes occupy more space than what is healthy for your future—especially when you want THE REAL THING—a fully available romantic partner that you are attracted to and compatible with and ready to make a serious commitment to you. Although male friendships can be wonderful placeholders foe the single woman in waiting, If you don’t want an old or ambiguous relationship occupying space simply because the space feels uncomfortable when it’s empty, and you want to keep yourself as available as possible to your future husband, you may have to re-evaluate that special friendship in your life. Sometimes empty is exactly what available looks like.
